On October 25, the 20th China Model United Nations Conference opened in Changchun, Jilin Province.
Organized by the China United Nations Association (CUNA) and supported by the International Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this year’s conference is hosted by Northeast Normal University. Since its inception in 2004, the China Model United Nations Conference has grown to become the most authoritative and closest simulation of the UN in the country. The event aims to promote UN ideals among university students, disseminate knowledge about the organization, and nurture high-quality young talents with an international perspective and capabilities in global governance. Over the course of four days, more than 300 student representatives, observers, and instructors from over 70 universities across the nation are participating in the conference.
During the opening ceremony, Hu Wenli, Vice President and Secretary-General of CUNA, emphasized the importance of the Model UN as a practical platform for young people to engage with international organizations. She encouraged attendees to embrace patriotism and youthful ideals, to diligently acquire knowledge, understand the rules, and develop their skills. “Let’s not waste our youth or the opportunities of our time,” she urged, calling for contributions to China’s modernization and the building of a shared human destiny.
Chen Kai, an advisor from the International Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the conference’s role in broadening the horizons of youth and enhancing their foreign language skills. He encouraged young people aspiring to engage in global governance to become idealistic, responsible, resilient, and hardworking citizens of the new era, who are well-versed in national policies, possess a global outlook, and are skilled in international communication and negotiation.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres sent a congratulatory letter and video message to the conference, underscoring the current need for youth involvement. “The world needs your voices and your contributions more than ever,” he stated. He noted the prevalence of conflict, rising tensions, historic levels of humanitarian need, and the spread of hate speech and misinformation. Guterres expressed the necessity for global unity and the need for the UN to harness the energy, creativity, courage, and commitment of the youth. He remains dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people in international affairs, urging them to be a force for positive change now and in the future.
