My Lovely Two of a Kind Teachers

**Interview with Tunde Akanni: Insights on Mentorship and Academic Inspiration**

**Interviewer:** Tunde, it’s great to have you here to share your incredible journey and the influential people who have played a role in it. Could you kick things off by telling us how you first met David Oladeji during your school years?

**Tunde Akanni:** Thank you for having me. My connection with David Oladeji began when fate brought him to Ede, in the old Oyo State. I was just a young student at Ede Muslim Grammar School, completely unaware that this meeting would profoundly influence my life. David had a remarkable sense of style that really struck a chord with all of us students. His sharp, slim-fit shirts and coordinated outfits conveyed confidence and authority that captivated our attention.

**Interviewer:** It sounds like he left quite an impression! What were his classes like?

**Tunde Akanni:** David taught Geography, specifically Human Geography, which was always an incredibly engaging experience. Each class required us to bring our hand-drawn world maps, and from there, he took us on mental journeys around the globe. He shared fascinating insights about major regions—from the Ruhr in the former USSR to the Appalachian Mountains and the Prairies of North America. His passion for teaching was contagious, inspiring many of us, including my friend, Dr. S.O. Ibraheem.

**Interviewer:** You mentioned a memorable experience with Dr. Ibraheem in the U.S. Can you tell us more about that?

**Tunde Akanni:** Absolutely, it was a significant moment for me. In 1998, I visited Dr. Ibraheem, who had just started a new job at Goldman Sachs. We spent our time shopping for his role while reminiscing about our school days with Oladeji. It was amusing how our Geography lessons resurfaced as we traveled through different landscapes. We both felt immense gratitude for David’s teachings, which not only educated us but also connected us to our roots.

**Interviewer:** It seems David’s influence has been lasting in your life. Did he continue his education after that?

**Tunde Akanni:** Yes, he did! David pursued his PhD, and while I initially thought he was focusing on Geography, he later shifted to Psychology. Now, he’s a professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he continues to inspire students. His journey serves as a reminder that a passion for teaching can lead to remarkable achievements.

**Interviewer:** You also mentioned your History teacher, Siyan Oyeweso. How did he shape your academic experience?

**Tunde Akanni:** Siyan Oyeweso was a powerful influence in my life. He taught me when I was a freshman at the University of Ilorin. Even as a recent graduate, his lectures were delivered with such expertise that it felt like learning from a veteran professor. His high standards and unwavering determination set the tone from the beginning, encouraging many of us to chase our academic dreams.

**Interviewer:** What does your relationship with Oyeweso mean to you?

**Tunde Akanni:** Our connection really deepened during the 1983 general elections when he unexpectedly appeared at my polling booth. After I voted, he took me home for lunch, which solidified a lifelong friendship. His support was instrumental in my academic journey and helped me re-enter academia as a scholar at LASU.

**Interviewer:** What do you find intriguing about the lives of academics?

**Tunde Akanni:** Academics lead intricate and enriching lives, often characterized by significant connections and shared experiences. Both David and Siyan have made substantial contributions to education, and their legacies extend far beyond their teachings, impacting generations to come.

**Interviewer:** Lastly, as Teachers’ Day draws near, what message would you like to share?

**Tunde Akanni:** On this special occasion, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all my teachers, whether formal or informal. They have played a crucial role in shaping my thoughts and character, and I pray for continued blessings in their lives. Happy Teachers’ Day!

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Tunde, for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It’s truly inspiring to hear how education and mentorship have significantly impacted your life.
