Australian printmaking master Andrew Trotman’s solo exhibition “Color Theory” opens in Sydney

On October 3rd, the Sydney CBD Gallery opened its doors to the highly anticipated solo exhibition “Color Theory,” showcasing the talented Australian printmaker Andrew Totman. This exhibition is aimed at promoting the development of printmaking art in Australia.

At the opening event, Andrew, an internationally recognized print master, took the opportunity to share insights into his creative process and the inspirations behind his artworks. He emphasized the historical roots of printmaking in China, noting that the oldest surviving woodblock print is the “Diamond Sutra.” This highlights the deep artistic traditions that inform his work. Andrew has traveled to China multiple times, where he dove into local printmaking techniques and traditions, which continue to significantly influence his art. His pieces frequently incorporate Eastern themes, featuring traditional floral motifs, including plum blossoms, orchids, and chrysanthemums.

The exhibition showcases 15 new works, with “Brilliance” standing out as a highlight. This artwork is remarkable for its use of over ten layers of vibrant, unique prints combined with gold leaf, resulting in a texture that echoes ancient scriptures. It evokes a profound, meditative atmosphere that invites viewers to pause and reflect.

Another striking piece, “Ice and Fire,” utilizes 66 layers of monotype printing, creating a stunning interplay of colors. Although the layering might initially seem chaotic, a meticulous arrangement emerges, revealing an abstract silhouette of an Eastern woman. The technical skill and innovative use of color in this piece make a significant impact on spectators.

During his engaging and lighthearted opening speech, Andrew captivated his audience, who expressed great interest in his work and connected with the cultural narratives woven into his art.

Running until October 19th, this exhibition offers art enthusiasts the chance to explore the harmonious blend of Eastern and Western artistic influences through Andrew’s extraordinary prints.
