On October 25, 2023, representatives from the Qinghai Meteorological Bureau shared crucial information with reporters regarding the weather conditions expected in the province. Due to the combined effects of a cold air mass and plateau trough, from the 25th to the 26th, most areas in Qinghai will experience precipitation, a drop in temperature, and windy conditions.
According to the forecast, the heaviest rainfall is anticipated during the daytime and nighttime of October 25. Specific regions such as Guoluo, southern Huangnan, and certain towns in Tianjun, Qilian, Gangcha, Haiyan, Datong, Huzhu, Hualong, and Tongde are expected to see moderate to heavy snowfall, with some areas potentially experiencing blizzard conditions.
Additionally, temperatures across most parts of Qinghai are projected to decrease by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, with some local areas dropping by over 10 degrees Celsius. In the Qaidam Basin, wind speeds are expected to reach between 6 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts exceeding 8 accompanied by brief sand and dust storms in isolated locations.
The snowfall is also likely to impact various highways. Notable affected routes include G0615 (from Delingha to Ma’erkang), G227 (from Zhangye to Menglian), G214 (from Xining to Lancang), and G215 (from Mazongshan Port to Ning’er). These roads will experience snowfall and fog, leading to slippery conditions and reduced visibility.
Meteorological officials have urged the public to remain vigilant during this weather event, particularly concerning low temperatures, temporary snow accumulation, and reduced visibility, as these factors could adversely affect energy supply, agricultural production, and transportation. They emphasized the need for preventive measures in eastern regions to protect energy supplies and agricultural facilities from the cold. In the Qaidam Basin, they advised residents to be aware of the potential impact of strong winds and sandstorms on infrastructure, air quality, and public health while also considering the prudent use of wind energy resources.
