On October 14th, the Cornerstone Evangelical Mission held a press conference in Flushing to launch a fundraising campaign for the family of a domestic violence victim from last month’s tragic incident. Reports indicate that the couple’s children are currently in the care of their grandmother, who is struggling financially and urgently needs assistance. Senior advisor to NY State Assembly member Jin Deyu, Ellen Yang, along with Vice President of the Guizhou Chamber of Commerce, Lu Yongli, participated in the event, calling on the community for support in raising funds to assist the victim’s family.
The incident occurred on September 9th, when a domestic dispute escalated to violence, leading to the death of Tang Guimei at the hands of her husband, Ma Qiahai, who has since been charged with multiple offenses and faces potential life imprisonment. The couple’s two young children, aged four and six, are currently being looked after by their grandmother in Guizhou, China.
Ellen Yang shared that the grandmother is overwhelmed and has contemplated giving up custody of the children due to her challenging circumstances. Upon receiving a plea for help from the victim’s family, Yang quickly took action, beginning with arrangements for the deceased’s body to be properly handled and planning for its cremation and return to China for burial.
Yang also emphasized the importance of mental health awareness in the community, especially in moments of emotional distress, encouraging individuals to seek professional help. She highlighted that besides the mental health resources provided by the Cornerstone Mission, the Asian American Medical Association, with funding support from the state, is working to enhance mental health services for the community.
Lu Yongli noted that the Guizhou Chamber of Commerce has been in contact with the victim’s family and local Chinese authorities to address the children’s educational needs and coordinate financial assistance from relevant agencies in Guizhou. Additionally, they plan to send flowers on the day of the funeral to express their condolences and support for the family. Lu expressed gratitude for the community’s heartfelt donations, acknowledging their critical importance for the family in financial distress.
Pastor and Executive Director Chen Zhi of the Cornerstone Mission shared concerns regarding many new immigrants in America who face language barriers, difficulties finding work, and lack of identification, making their lives challenging. He noted that, without guidance and resources, these individuals are more susceptible to emotional distress, which can lead to negative behaviors. The Cornerstone Mission is committed to providing support, particularly regarding issues like domestic violence, and reminded everyone that criminal offenses in the U.S. can have severe impacts on their identity and future.
Currently, the two young children of Tang Guimei and Ma Qiahai remain in Guizhou, China, in need of immediate assistance due to their family’s impoverished situation. The community is urged to contribute, with funds dedicated to the children’s education and daily necessities.
