California recently launched an $80 million subsidy program aimed at helping multi-family residences and single-family homes across the state achieve energy-efficient electrification. According to a report by KTLA 5, this initiative is a collaboration between the California Energy Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy, providing funds to assist low- and moderate-income single-family homeowners as well as multi-family building owners and agents in applying for energy efficiency upgrades, including replacing electric stoves and installing heat pump equipment.
The application process for multi-family housing subsidies is already open, with applications for single-family home subsidies expected to be available in the coming weeks. Residents can find more information at https://techcleanca.com/incentives/heehrarebates/.
Subsidies for multi-family residences range from $700 to $8,000 per unit, with a maximum potential of $14,000 depending on the household income. According to the Sacramento Bee, single-family home subsidies typically fall between $4,000 and $8,000 based on household income; families that earn 80% or less of the area’s median income may qualify for higher subsidy amounts, while those with moderate incomes may receive lower funding.
This program is part of California’s broader effort to reduce carbon emissions from buildings that primarily rely on fossil fuels for heating and cooking. The goal is to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resilience in the face of climate change.
California Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “California has always led the way, helping people save money through climate action. Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration and the historic Inflation Reduction Act, Californians can now access thousands of dollars to switch to energy-efficient appliances.”
